How it works
After injection, semaglutide binds GLP-1 receptors. When blood glucose is high it can increase insulin secretion and lower glucagon. It also slows gastric emptying and can reduce hunger, which is why many patients notice smaller portions. Response varies, and hypoglycaemia risk rises if it is combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.
Use only as your prescriber directs. Licensed weekly pens are typically started at a low dose and increased slowly to limit nausea. Inject into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, rotating sites. Common effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and reduced appetite.
